The Neighbourhood
Located just north of
Eramosa on Wellington County Road 124 (formerly highway 24), and south of Fergus.
Barrie Hill faces County Road 29. This road is now a well travelled route of
people heading around Guelph or moving toward the "Orangeville" road
east of Fergus. Our building is still surrounded by viable farms with some housing
edging the road. Settled early in 1830's this road has two churches. Barrie
Hill United (formerly 1st Presbyterian of Eramosa) and Speedside United (originally
Congregationalist)--our sister church which are less than three kilometers apart.
A few of the original farm families remain at the church. But now many members
are 'new' arrivals - who seek a rural church - and a community minded congregation.
The central schools for our younger people are Eramosa Public, Ponsonby Public
and Rockwood Centennial Public in the country and June Avenue Public in Guelph.
Our younger adults attend Guelph's John F. Ross C.V.I. and Fergus' Centre Wellington
District High School. With the location being half way between Fergus and Guelph-sport
teams and local facilities are used in both areas. The Marden and Rockwood Libraries
serves the community well.
